The Oxo Garden Tool Line Story

The development objective of the Oxo Good Grips Garden Tool line was to create tools that are comfortable to use, minimize injury and enhance user function. When developing the Garden Tools, the company studied how all types of users, from casual gardener to landscape architects and horticulturists, interact with tools by observing them while gardening.

The company also noted usage, grip, posture and even the impact clothing worn during gardening has on tools. Additionally, male and female hand measurements including hand, finger, wrist and grip width were collected and analyzed. Oxo used this information to develop the most comfortable tools possible by ensuring users' wrists and forearms stay in alignment to prevent tissue compression.

Research Findings" Gel™-e, Striking and Squeeze Handles.

Oxo discovered through its research that using short-handled garden and pruning tools generally requires one of three hand motions: pushing, pulling or squeezing. Oxo used its research to design a line of garden tools with features and handles specific to each motion and task. The result is a collection of high-quality Garden Tools.

For Tools that are Pushed, developed the Gel™-e handle. This handle features a soft, no-slip grip with a gel material that provides extra cushioning when the tools is pushed into tough compacted soil. The gel flexes to absorb pressure and reduce hand stress while digging. Oxo used a blue color in the handle to make the tools easier to locate in the dirt or grass.

For Tools that are Pulled, developed a striking handle. This handle features two grip positions - the user can choke up on the grip for strength, or grab the back of the grip for added reach. The handle is also long enough to accommodate two hands when maximum effort is needed. Each grip position is curved to nestle comfortable in the hand, and the entire handle is covered with a soft, non-slip materials. The striking handle is optimal for cultivating, a task that requires both striking and pulling.

For Tools that Prune:. Oxo examined squeezing motions and developed various soft, non-slip squeeze handles to absorb pressure. The Garden scissors have a large loop handle to accommodate the fist so users can apply the the strength of the entire hand instead of just the fingers. The scissors and hand shears springs open for less hand strain and lock shut for safety and storage. The soft handles on the loppers are broad so users can use their whole hand to keep the cutting action controlled.
