For the small grower, your most valuable resource is probably your own health or the health of your family members. For the large grower, it is not only yourself, but also the people who you manage or employ. It takes so long to build up good health and it can be destroyed in a matter of minutes without proper protection. The "ounce of prevention" rule is never more important than when it comes to safety in the workplace.

Safety in the workplace begins with "the decision maker". Safety plans work if the decision maker takes an interest in some kind of safety training on a regular basis. When the workers know that their boss is truly interested in their safety, they implement the plans. Employers have reported some of the following changes in employee participation when worker safety is given a number one priority.

• Safety equipment, although cumbersome at times, is used.
• Long time employees teach new employees worker safety.
• Employees "think" before acting.

Most of our experience with growers has been that employers want to be safe. Owners are genuinely concerned about their employees well being. It has been one of the primary goals of Frostproof Growers to assist the employer/grower by providing the necessary safety equipment, and to explore new ways to make the goal of a "safe workplace" a reality.
