Optimum Soil pH

How to Adjust Soil pH

To lower pH (make soil less alkaline):

  1. Incorporate generous amounts of organic matter before planting.
  2. Add sulfur-based soil acidifier.
  3. Use acid-form fertilizers such as ammonium sulfate whenever practical.

Product directions on the packages will usually tell you how much to add to obtain desired results. Your local nurseryman can offer several varieties.

To raise pH (make soil less acidic):

  1. Incorporate finely ground limestone into soil
  2. Beware of the pH of the water you're using to irrigate

Again your local nurseryman or extension agent is a good source of how much limestone to add but a good rule of thumb is to add 50 to 75 pounds per 1,000 square feet for a pH increase of 1.0.

Before making any adjustments to your soil get a good pH reading first so you know where you are starting from.
